Korovai – The Most Romantic Baked Good!

Korovai is referred to as the wedding bread among the Slavs. Parents bestow blessings upon the newlywed couple, wishing them prosperity, abundance, and happiness in their family life. Only a contented married woman was permitted to bake the korovai, with expectations that her children would be obedient and well-behaved. The belief was that the larger the korovai, the happier the family would be.

Previously, it was not cut or broken into pieces, but rather, it was kissed three times. The circular shape of the korovai has been passed down through generations, paying homage to the worship of the pagan god of the sun. As historical accounts unveil, korovai was not limited to wedding occasions but was also baked for housewarming ceremonies. Traditionally, the host prepared the dough, while the baking was overseen by the hostess. The korovai occupied a prominent position on the table.

It was customary to offer all the guests a share of the korovai and to position a couple of pieces in the corners of the dwelling. Ancestors held the belief that this ritual would cleanse the family of negativity and usher in a life of happiness.
